May 17th, 1882 - Morning
I was awoken, early, not by the heavy boots of a constable, but by the gentle yet unmistakable commanding clack of a lady’s heeled shoes. Before I could prepare myself for a visit from the fairer sex, I found myself looking into Miss Jenkins’ eyes.
‘Miss Jenkins!’ said I, trying to adjust my shirt collar without her noticing. I hoped also that the stubble on my chin and the unwashed fragrance of my body was not as ungainly as I believed. ‘The detective let you down here?’
‘He did,’ replied she, most calmly. ‘There is no need to sharpen your appearance, Professor; I am sure that a night in here wreaks havoc with one’s wardrobe.’
‘I … yes, indeed, Miss Jenkins. I cannot tell you how wonderful it is to see you, but how did you end up in Norwich?’
‘You left one of your books back at the boarding house. I came to give it to you, but when I inquired as to your whereabouts, I heard that you had been accused of assault. So, here I am,’ said she, most confidently. ‘I have already sent a cable to father explaining the situation. He should be on the next train. I am sure the constabulary will take his words most seriously and free you immediately.’
‘Are you sure about this?’ asked I uncertainly.
‘You are innocent, are you not?’
‘I am. I would never strike a man with purpose.’
‘Then I am very sure, Professor,’ said she, a somewhat metallic strength to her voice. She then left as quickly as she had come and I, entirely bemused by it all, sat in a stupor for several moments before truly comprehending all that she had said. If she and the bishop got their way, then I would be a free man again by the end of the day.
